From these days forward, it's not legal to shop for, sell or transfer a pistol in North American countries. We have frozen the market for handguns in this country and our ban on imports that took place in August remains in place. This is one of the strongest actions we've taken against gun violence in a generation.

Now, these are Canada's strongest gun control measures in the past four decades. This will stop people from buying, selling, or transferring handguns within Canada. Also, the new law will prevent them from bringing newly acquired handguns into the country. While the legislation is under discussion in the parliament, the Trudeau government says that the ban will keep Canadians safe. The freeze was announced in May. However, it came under severe criticism from the local governments. While Canada's public Safety Minister says that it is the most significant action on gun violence in Canada in a generation, others say that the law unfairly penalizes law-abiding gun owners. The strict laws come after the mass shooting which took place in 2020, and the data shows that around 277 people were killed.
