Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been disqualified by the Election Commission
We start with some breaking news coming in. Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been disqualified by the Election Commission of Pakistan and has been found guilty of corruption charges after the election commission ruled that Imran Khan misled officials about the gifts received from the foreign leaders while in power. Enron Khan has been disqualified for a period of five months and can only contest in the next election. Khan has been defeated by the National Assembly and legal proceedings will begin against the former Pakistan Prime Minister.
According to the rules, government officials must declare all gifts that they have received but are allowed to keep only those below a certain value. The expensive gifts should go to the government treasury. But Imran Khan and his wife received lavish gifts worth millions of dollars during trips abroad. They included luxury watches, jewelry, designer handbags as well as perfumes. Khan has also been accused of failing to declare some gifts or the profit made from selling them. Now for more on this, we are being joined by the Pakistan Bureau chief and US Malek. Hello to you and Nas.
Could you briefly sum up what are the implications of this ban on Imran Khan?
Well, Alison, this is a landmark verdict that came in. I was inside the court. It is a unanimous verdict that came from the election commission of Pakistan. Though one member of the bench was missing. It is being said the member of Punjab of the election commission was not feeling well and therefore he was not present before the court today while the verdict was being announced. Now what this means is that Imran Khan will not be able to contest elections, and will not be able to retain his seat either for this term but he will be able to contest elections in the upcoming term. That is something that will be clarified in the written order because there are a lot of interpretations that are coming in. But by and large, this is a level playing field that is being seen because of the fact that we previously saw that the incumbent government, the PML, or Imran Hans's opposition has been saying that Imran Khan that there was no level playing field. So with Imran Khan being disqualified and so Nawasharif, they considerably seem to be that thought that the level preparing exists now.
Has there been any reaction from the former Pakistan Prime Minister or from his party the PTI?
Well, the party leaders were speaking right outside the election commission just after the verdict came in. I heard them live and they were repeated questions that were asked. They said that this is an illegal Immoral verdict, that this holds no ground, that they were expecting the verdict on these lines, and lastly that they will be challenging the verdict. That is what the reaction came in. But by and large, the fact that disqualification is under 63, one b that in the constitution says that it is for the time being. So it is being interpreted as that Imran Khan, going forward, will be able to hold or will be able to contest elections, though we're also seeing reactions coming in from the opposition parties. And as I talk to you, Mariam Nawashiri, the daughter of the power of Pakistani Prime Minister NA Ashley, has tweeted and she said that Iran Han is now a certified liar.
